bartender ... and cook . . . To-

day he is Robert Jacobs' and
Billy Jacobs' right hand man.
HELEN KOLLIN, nutri-
tion consultant and president
of the Interagency Nutrition
Alliance (INA), tells of a new
nutrition reference, "Nutri-
tion: Just The Facts," a joint
project developed by both the
INA and Nutrition Commit-
tee of the American Heart
Association of Michigan,
Oakland County . . . Readers
may receive a free copy by
calling the Heart Association,
557-9500.
INA of Oakland County is
a recognized non-profit volun-
tary group of nutrition profes-
sionals actively involved in
nutrition education and
intervention.
Helen sends "Enrichment
Facts In Michigan" which in-
cludes something most in-
teresting . . . Isn't it better to
eat whole wheat bread? Yes,
it certainly is the best choice.
But not everyone make this
choice. Most ethnic breads
and rolls are made with white
flour. For example, pumper-
nickel bread, thought to be so
healthy because it is brown, is
usually made from white
unenriched flour with coffee,
cocoa; or carmel coloring. The
food value of most pumper-
nickel bread is the same as
white bread."
. Also . . . "Why does
Michigan need an enrich-
ment law? In 1984 we became
aware of an increase of iron-
deficiency anemia in
segments of the Oakland
County population. INA has
been working on an enrich-
ment law for Michigan
residents since that time. All
products shipped interstate
must be enriched. At this
time Michigan is one of only
several states which does not
have an enrichment law.
"Bill 5057 concerning
breads, rolls, buns, bagels and
pita, also macaroni and noo-
dle products is in the Depart-
ment of Agriculture Commit-
tee for review. Lend your voice
to ours to speed up the process
of bringing this bill out of
committee into law. Please
write to the chairman of this
committee . . . State
Representative Thomas L.
Hickner, House of Represen-
tatives, Room 412, Roosevelt
Bldg., Lansing, MI 48909.
