FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 1988
Shur composed a cantata in honor of Rabbi Sherwin Wine's 60th
birthday.
he began work on the special
cantata.
Born in Latvia, Shur came
to his interest in music
naturally. Both his father and
brother were professional con-
ductors and musicians, and
he studied music at home
throughout childhood, with
his father as teacher.
Just out of high school, he
travelled to Munich, where he
enrolled in the Kunst
Akademie, then to Israel, stu-
dying for several years under
Paul Ben-Haim, who was, at
the time, the leading sym-
phonic composer in Israel.
While still in Israel, Shur
began to make his name in
music, receiving the Nissimof
Prize in 1952 in nation-wide
competition for best choral
composition. A year later, he
was commissioned to compose
the score for Dor Dor Ve'Yor-
shav, a two-hour pageant
presented by the Israeli
Broadcasting orchestra,- choir,
ballet company, actors and
soloists.
Eventually, Shur came to
the United States to study
'composition, orchestration
and conducting at UCLA.
Shortly after his arrival in
this country, he wrote the
music to Each Had Six Wings,
an Israeli play which debuted
in Hollywood in 1962, and in
1966, he collaborated with
composer Johnny Mandel on
music for the hit.movie, The
Russians Are Coming, The
Russians Are Coming.
"That was a very nice ex-
perience," said Shur. "I came
to the movie rather late, and
(producer-director) Norman
Jewison, after hearing the
choir I'd rehearsed, said
`Where were you before? You
are better than all my Rus-
sian advisers!' "
In addition to his extensive
work in liturgical music, Shur
often composes dance scores
for choreographer Fanchon
Shur, his wife, and the two
collaborate on musical pieces
also, said Shur. Of their four
children, three are profes-_
Because of a hectic
schedule, Shur could not be
present at the performance of
the special cantata. Chances
are, he would have been
greatly pleased, however.
Presented to more than 500
members of the congregation,
the cantata in honor of Rabbi
Wine (performed by a choir
which included several
members of the Michigan
Opera Theatre) received a
standing ovation at its
conclusion. -
"When I heard it the first
time, I was overwhelmed,"
said Rabbi Wine after the per-
formance. "I felt a sense of ge-
nuine excitement and fulfill-
ment at hearing my words
transferred to music. I feel
like the work has taken on a
new dimension!'
The presentation was a
highlight of the first of 20
events which will be held this
year to celebrate Birm-
ingham Temple's 25th an-
niversary.
