I PURELY COMMENTARY I Haggadah Continued from preceding page bi Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1888) held numerous rabbinical positions in Ger- many. He also attained secular training at the University of Bonn. The Hirsch Haggadah is among the milestones in the literary achievements of the distinguished scholar and it is noteworthy that it is dedicated to the haggadah's publisher, Philipp Feldheim, by his children. The importance of the Hirsch text is that, in addi- tion to the voluminous com- mentaries, Rabbi Hirsch gave an account of the rabbis of yore who activated the hag- gadah in the seder disputa- tions. Then there are the numerous appended sources which provide a basis for study as well as celebration at the sedorim. Therefore the special value in the voluminous century-old hag- gadah and its commentator. Sam Cohodas: Idol Of The U.P. Sam Cohodas was literally idolized in the Upper Peninsula. He never abandoned the area that became his home and his life's devotion. It was in the area surrounding Mar- quette, where he bowed to academia of Northern Michigan University, , and Ishpening and surroundings, where he became the Produce King of several states and the inspiration to farmers, miners, industrialists, bank- ing experts. In his Jewish devotions he became the symbol for spiritual encouragement to whoever settled there, to children who needed school- ing, to worshippers who need- ed a synagogue. And he always rose above partisanship: he was the ecumenist par excellence. He could never be accused of pre- judice or discrimination. Politically, however, he was the loyal Republican. He was admired by people like Gover- nor William Milliken. When there was need to aid Israel by means of supporting Israel Bonds, Governor Milliken and Sam Cohodas stood side by side at an important func- tion in Detroit. He had a great concern for every cause that helped children. When he heard about JARC — Jewish Association for Retarded Citizens — he promptly became the supporter of the Detroit-based movement. When he learned that scholarships were being assigned to young collegiates in Detroit to study in Israel, he was generous to such tasks. Recollections about his generosity can be anticipated by the thousands Americans, Israelis and peoples of all faiths. Therefore, this addi- tional tribute to a man im- bued with charm, devotion and scores of inspirations.
