Passover's many blessings,
rooted in the family unity
represented at the seder, have
the supreme appeal in the
Haggadah. Therefore the ap-
peal provided in its text for ar-
tistic expressions and delinea-
tions. The Passover Hag-
gadah and the Purim
Megillah have overpowering
appeals for artists.
At Passover time many new
festival texts appear and this
year's scholarly work is
represented in the new edi-
tion of the Haggadah that
represents a legacy from a
major Orthodox interpreter of
traditions enacted at the
seder and chanted in the Hag-
gadah. It is The Hirsch Hag-
gadah reproduced for this
Passover by Feldheim
Publishers. The appeals to
the high goals in Jewish
observance, the emphasis on
family devotions, the em-
phasis on the urgency of giv-
ing priority in Jewry to the
cultural-spiritual-Jewish
devotions make the Hag-
gadah commentary an
endless sermon. It is a
treasured gift for this
Passover.

after that nothing. In 1900 he

In the description of pride
in Prof. Richard Ellmann as
one of Michigan's most
distinguished products, the
family as a collective role. His
father, James I. Ellmann, was
a municipal judge in
Highland Park where
Richard was born. He was one
of the founders and a presi-
dent of the Jewish Communi-
ty Council of Detroit and was
a president of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit. He
was prominent as an ar-
bitrator in the practice of law.
Richard's mother, Jean
Ellmann, had literary skills
of her own. She had high
qualities as a poet who also il-
lustrated her works. She
wrote reviews of operatic and
other musical events for
weekly newspapers.
The famous biographer's
two brothers, Erwin and
William, are practicing law
here.
Richard Ellman acquired
acclaim on an international
scale. He taught at Harvard,
Yale, Northwestern, Emory,
University of Chicago, In-
diana University and Oxford,
where he was Goldsmiths'
professor of English literature
and fellow of New College. He
died in Oxford in 1987 at the
age of 69.
