NEWS Say'l DS " to Ar t AR Netanyahu Opens Knesset Campaign Tel Aviv (JTA) — Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's former ambassador to the United Na- tions, opened his campaign for the Knesset as a militant Likud-Herut hard-liner only minutes after tendering his resignation to Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Dropping his role as diplo- mat, he launched blistering attacks on the United Na- tions, where he had served since 1984; on the American administration, which he ac- cused of "active engagement in direct negotiations with the Palestine Liberation Organization"; on Secretary of State George Shultz's Mid- dle East peace plan, and on his erstwhile colleague, Yossi Beilin, the political director general of the Foreign Ministry. La Mirage—Southfield Netanyahu is considered close to Prime Minister Yit- zhak Shamir and is popular among conservative thinkers, particularly those in the Shamir-Moshe Arens camp. Arens, a former defense minister and former ambas- sador to the United States, is, like Shamir, a Herut hard- liner. Netanyahu is likely to get a spot among the first 10 names on the Likud election lists, which virtually assures him of a seat in the next Knesset. Netanyahu, who said when he announced his resignation that he hoped for a place on the Likud list in the Knesset elections scheduled for next November, charged that Shultz had been "influenced by all sorts of Arabist officials in the State Department." 358-0830 wm *sNtc' m*v Nar.„„. • Israeli Accused Of Being KGB Spy In W. Germany vv*. 0.niowekR9ro •rk,. Bonn (JTA) — Shimon Or, an Israeli accused of spying for the KGB, has been impris- oned in Dusseldorf prison. The 49-year old Hebrew teacher maintains that he is innocent. Or was one of six West Ger- man residents taken into custody in Dusseldorf for allegedly passing classified information to the KGB, the Soviet secret service, about a Eurojet fighterplane project. Or, who was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to Israel in the early 1970s, has been living in Aachen since 1981 with his wife, Rivka, also an Israeli and . their daughters age 8 and 10. Three other Soviet emigres were among the six arrested in what prosecutor Redman described as "a major pene- tration of the KGB spy net- work." Or's lawyer, Reiner Hoff- man, said that his client's ef- forts to obtain exit visas for his sick, elderly parents in the Soviet Union brought him into contact with a Russian whom the prosecution de- scribes as a secret agent. Hoff- man said Or flatly rejected at- tempts by this man to per- suade the Israeli to deliver information. Maple Birmingham Rome (JTA) — Msgr. Michel Sabbah, the first Palestinian appointed by the pope to the office of Catholic patriarch of Jerusalem, has likened the suffering of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupa- tion to the suffering of Jesus on the cross. He made the comparison in an interview with the news- paper La Repubblica, pub- lished here last week. The in- terview was conducted in Jerusalem three months after Pope John Paul II named Sab- bah , the highest-ranking Catholic prelate in the Holy Land. Sabbah, who admitted he has had no contact. with the Israeli authorities since assuming his new office, drew an analogy between Jesus' ordeal and that of the Pales- tinian people. He said Jesus bore the cross and "every Palestinian car- ries the cross and has done so for many years. They carry it through wounds, through jail, through people closed into camps, through families without wages or food — an individual, social and collec- tive cross."
