Magen David
Adorn In Debt

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Finance Ministry averted
supension of ambulance ser-
vice in Israel when it agreed
to turn over $765,000 to the
Magen David Adom to renew
its insurance on the vehicles.
The MDA, which operates
first-aid clinics, blood banks
and other paramedical ser-
vices in addition to the coun-
try's ambulances, last week
announced thatits ambulance
fleet would be idled because of
its inability to pay the in-
surance premiums due.
The Finance Ministry has
frozen some $2 million of
MDA funds against tax in-
debtedness and overdue pay-
ments to the National
Insurance Institute. In addi-
tion, Travenol, which supplies
plastic bags for blood plasma
storage, has attached MDA's
bank accounts for non-
payment of bills.

Olympics Out
For Israelis

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A 3 to 0
•win by Australia over Taiwan
dashed the hopes of Israel's
national soccer team to play
in the Olympic games this
summer in Seoul, South
Korea.
Israel's 1 to 0 victory over
New Zealand last week was to
no avail. The four-nation
Oceania region pre-Olympic
playoffs ended with Australia
gaining 10 points to Israel's 9.
New Zealand came to a poor
third with 5 points. Taiwan
had none.
Israel was forced to play in
the Oceania region, because
Arab pressure barred it from
competing in the Middle East
region matches. It will be
-playing in the Oceania region
in the World Cup soccer tour-
naments in 1989.

Homosexual
Acts Legalized

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Knesset legalized homosex-
ual activity between consen-
ting adults, and raised to 20
years the maximum penalty
for rape of either sex under
aggravated circumstances.
The amendment to the
penal code also bars publica-
tion of the name or identify-
ing details of the victim of a
sex attack, unless the victim
gives permission, in court, for
details to be published.
Homosexual activity was
not previously included
among the details of sexual
crimes in the penal code.
