Berries 'n Bon Bons ATTENTION: PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS! disobedience, is convinced that the more the Israelis "punish" the Palestinians, the greater will be their resistance. Awad himself, who has con- ducted a long campaign to be allowed to stay in Israel, may not be around to see his theories tested. His tourist visa expired in November, his Jerusalem residence status has been revoked, and last week the High Court of Justice ordered the Interior Minister to show cause within 60 days why Awad should not be deported. Awad certainly has the satisfaction of seeing his ideas - peddled fruitlessly for many months—finally taking root among the organizers of the intifada. Ultimately he envisages total non-coopera- tion with Israel, the growth of alternative Palestinian in- stitutions, the strengthening of Palestinian self-respect and self-reliance. "They are the best tradesmen around, but they can't come to work because their village is under curfew—and even when the curfew is lifted, they will be too afraid of the Shabiba. "But if I'm suffering, im- agine how it is for them. They all have large families to sup- port. Who is going to feed them? And how long can they go on before they use up all their savings? This craziness has to end sometime." But the craziness shows no sign of going away. In the war of nerves now being waged in the occupied territories, each side is determined not to be the first to concede. Israel's Chief of Staff Dan Shomron spoke confidently this week about about the short-term effectiveness of Israel's policy of economic sanctions and military force.
