LOCAL NEWS Remembrance Event Planned For April 19 Each year, on the day before Yom Haatzmaut, the Jewish nation remembers its sons and daughters who gave their lives in the wars for Israel. In Israel a siren is sounded for one minute on the morn- ing of Yom Hazikaron, mark- ing the beginning of the Memorial Day. Flags are lowered at half mast, traffic halts, and all activity ceases. Mothers and fathers, wives and children, brothers and sisters mourn their loved ones. At the end of the day, the siren sounds once more. The mourning ceases, flags are again raised high, and the celebration of Yom Haatz- maut commences. Following this tradition the Jewish community of Detroit will commemorate Yom Hazikaron with a commun- ity-wide ceremony on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Maple/Drake Jewish Com- munity Center. Jewish organizations are co- sponsoring the memorial ceremony. The community is invited. Chairmen for this event are: Shula Fleischer, Eve Kraus and Annette Meskin.
