Actress Debuts
In 'Gaby' Film

achel Levin, a young
New York stage ac-
tress, makes her
screen debut in Gaby — A
True Story, which treats the
thoughts and emotions of a
handicapped young woman
who can neither speak, walk
nor even move her hands. She
communicates only by
operating an electric
typewriter with her left foot.
Visually recreating this
contemporary character, who
even wrote the scenario
herself, seemingly is a
miracle, but Levin makes the
part so real that the suppor-
ting performers as well as
members of the Mexican crew
believed that the woman in
the wheelchair was actually
the Gabriela Brimmer of the
autobiography.
Perhaps it's because Levin
herself was the victim of a
neuro-muscular disorder and
didn't work for five years.
Before her illness, she had ap-
peared in several Off-
Broadway productions and in
regional theater, including
Romeo and Juliet at the Cir-
cle in the Square, and perfor-
mances of Moliere, Girardoux
and Strindberg with a New
York company.
Levin said her chance to
play Gaby occurred after
Meshulam Riklis saw her per-
form in Duet for One on stage.
Four months after completion
of that run and after work in
the new play The Men's Club
and such classics as
Chekhov's Uncle Vanya,
Levin received a telephone
call from Luis Mandoki, a
Mexican film director, who is
Jewish.
He asked her to come meet
him to discuss a possible
leading role in a film. Riklis,
upon reading the script for
Gaby, had told Mandoki and
first-time producer Pinchas
Perry, an Israeli attorney,
that Levin would be ideal.
Riklis also was executive pro-
ducer of the film The Chosen
and several starring his wife,
Pia Zadora.
Levin shares the laurels
with Liv Ullmann and Robert
Loggia portraying Gaby's
parents, a Jewish couple that
fled Austria for Mexico when
the Germans annexed their
own country. Gaby was born
in those trying days and her
affliction may have been caus-
ed by the Nazi terror faced by
her parents. Also prominent
in the cast is Norma Alean-
dro, the Argentine star of The

Official Story.
