The news is chic. Sleek. Suave. Design with great dare and sophistication. The deco semi-circle,
a startlingly beautiful breakthrough in contour. The subtle close-harmony of gold-tone and taupe.
An immensely varied his/hers collection crackling with creativity. It must be seen.

crop. But the angel of death,
once released, does not
distinguish between the guil-
ty and the innocent. Our
triumphal hymn is muted.
The cup of wine does not spill
over with unrestrained joy.
A medieval Jewish custom
placed the ten drops of wine
onto a broken plate. Some
believe it to signify the
broken vessel of our world.
Our attention is directed to
the shattered vessel, to our
obligation to redeem the
sparks hidden among the
husks, shards and ciphers in
our midst.
Matzah
This matzah for the Seder is
baked out of wheat or rye or
oats or barley or spelt.
Curiously, when moistened
and allowed to ferment, these
five types of grains become
"chametz," leavened food pro-
hibited to be eaten during the
Passover. Matzah derives
from the same grains which
are chametz. So too are the
vices and virtues of our lives
interwoven, our energies for
good and evil intricately con-
nected. Of itself the grain is
neither good nor evil, neither
matzah nor chametz. What
makes it one or the other is
the intention and use to
which it is assigned. Each, in
its proper place, has its pur-
pose. It is we, not the neutral
grain, who consecrate or
desecrate, who turn it into
leavened bread or matzah.

The Passover victory is
tempered by our considera-
tion of the innocents who died
drafted to serve in the
Pharaoh's chariot corps. We
do not sing the whole Hallel
on the last six days of
Passover. Who, witnessing the
death of God's children, dares
sing "When I was brought
low, God saved me," or taunt
the dead by recalling their
idols who had ears but could
not hear, hands which could
not save? We recall the ten
plagues with ambivalence.
We and our children were sav-
ed through the river turning
red with blood and the storm

On Passover we eat
theology and drink ethics. On
our plates, in our cups, with
the posture of our bodies, in
the gesture of our hands, in
the way we eat and drink and
sing, in the way we converse
with each ;ftther — are found
the teaci ro. of a people's faith
