ceived as a man whose
troubled Christian conscience
has led him to sacrifice
himself for the cause of
nuclear disarmament or
Palestinian rights.
Similarly, Israelis are skep-
tical of Vanunu's conversion
to Christianity. Jews, they
concede, do convert to Chris-
tianity, but not Jews like
Mordechai Vanunu, steeped
in the ritual and faith of a
deeply religious background.
The Moroccan community
in Israel is arguably the most
fiercely patriotic, religiously
observant and politically
hawkish group in the country,
forming the solid backbone of
support for the Likud bloc.
So why did Vanunu do it?
There are suggestions that he
was motivated by some kind
of delayed-adolescent rebel-
lion against his family, sexual
inadequacy (denied by his
American girlfriend), a desire
to get back at the Ashkenazi
establishment that consigned
the Vanunu family — and
thousands of Sephardi im-
migrants like them — to the
underside of Israeli society.
What public anger there is
over the Vanunu affair is
directed at the authorities —
at the security officials in
Dimona who allowed his ec-
centric behavior to go unde-
tected; who failed to notice
that he was calmly photo-
graphing the most secret
areas of the most super-secret
installation in Israel; who
allowed him to leave the coun-
try with his precious rolls of
film after he was fired
because of budget cuts.
If Mordechai Vanunu suc-
ceeded in embarrassing
Israel's security services and
creating an international
storm, he failed — if that was
his intention — to put the
nuclear issue onto Israel's
public agenda.
The plain fact is that the
Israeli public is not in-
terested. Perhaps because it
has so much else to worry
about; perhaps because
Armaggedon is a real pros-
pect and one that might as
easily arrive via conventional
missiles and chemical weaons
as by nuclear warheads.
Perhaps they will decide to
confront the issue when they
have time to think about
something other than rioting
Palestinians, American peace
initiatives, political crises and
the coming elections. One
thing is certain, the time is
not now.
Mordechai Vanunu, a tragic,
enigmatic figure, will embark
on his 18-year jail term with-
out having caused more than
a passing ripple of concern
about what goes on at that
secret hideaway in the Negev.
