bi Freedman, half of the Jews
who join the Orthodox com-
munity each year are
newly-observant.
Jews have returned to
religion because they see the
disastrous results of non-
observance, explains Rabbi
Leizer Levin, president of
Vaad Harabbanim, the
Detroit Council of Orthodox
Rabbis. "If you see the man
who's not going to shul, it
makes you want to go."
The presence of ba'alei
teshuvah has challenged and
energized those Orthodox
Jews who are F.F.B. — Frum
(religious) From Birth — as
they refer to themselves.

"The newly observant peo-
ple give an infusion of fresh
enthusiasm," says Rabbi
Abraham Jacobovitz of
Machon L'Torah, who
counsels many local Jews on
the road to Orthodoxy. "They
raised questions that were
not asked before. Because
(they were once non-
observant), they know what
they were missing. They feel
the void, so they push harder!'

Because the newly observant
want to put their past lives
behind them, many try to
overcompensate, "and they
impose that overcompensa-
tion on the rest of the com-
munity," according to Pro-
fessor Zvi Gitelman.
"I wish sometimes they had
a better perspective on why
they do things," says Alan
Steinmetz.
"These people have no
models," one man com-
plains."There's no sense of
proportion."
Gitelman rejects the
premise that the community
has become more observant.
"There is a greater obser-
vance of minutiae," he em-
phasizes. "But is there
greater morality? Is there a
stricter adherence to business
ethics?
