mourning ceases, flags are
again raised high, and the
celebration of Yom Haatz-
maut commences.
Following this tradition, the
Jewish community of Detroit
will commemorate Yom Hazi-
karon with a community-
wide ceremony on April 19 at
7:30 p.m. at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
Jewish organizations are co-
sponsoring the memorial
ceremony. The community is
invited. Chairmen for this -
event are Shula Fleischer,
Eva Kraus and Annette
Meskin.

Jewish Festival '88, a
celebration of the State of
Israel's 40th birthday, will
take place from 10 a.m. to 8
p.m. May 1 at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center.
Arranged by the Detroit
Chapter, American Jewish
Committee, the day-long
event will feature Israeli and
Jewish foods, entertainment,
dancing, music, children's ac-
tivities and art.
Food booths, under the
direction of Shirley Behar
and Arnold Michlin, will
represent the following
Jewish communities: Ethio-
pian, Sephardic, Hungarian,
Romanian, Russian, Polish,
Israeli, Bulgarian.
In addition to Israeli music,
Rita Falbel will sing Jewish
songs in several languages,
the Maxwell Street Klezmer
Band will perform, the ABZ
Trio will provide Israeli and
Yiddish music, Judith Cohen
will sing Moroccan Jewish
songs and Mrs. Behar will
lead the singing of Sephardic
folk songs. Debbie Hochberg
and Mike Karoub will enter-
tain with cello and piano
music in the Jewish Center
lobby throughout the day.
Diane Hochberg is festival co-
chairman and chairman of
entertainment.
The Nora Aviv Dance
Group will lead Israeli danc-
ing and members of the
Sephardic community will
lead Sephardic folk dances.
Children's activities, con-
ducted by Marilyn Wolfe and
Suzanne Satz, will include an
El Al paper airplane contest,
relay races, art projects, flag
making, Israeli birthday par-
ty, storytelling, movies and
songs.
An art exhibit of the works
of Israeli artist Raphael
Abecassis, arranged by
Danielle Peleg, will be on
display in the Jewish Center
lobby.
Families are invited. Ad-
mission is free.
