Si Kenen, AIPAC Founder Si Kenen Si Kenen leaves a legacy in American Jewish liber- tarianism that is unmatched in Jewish activism on a world scale. As founder of AIPAC — American Israel Public Af- fairs Committee — Isaiah L. Kenen, who died in Washington on March 23 at age 83, was the activist who had as much admiration from the non-Jewish community as from the fellow Jews he had enlisted in his efforts to galvanize the movement that began with support for the Zionist cause and proceeded to the time of his death. He knew nearly every member of both Houses of congress since 1943 until his retrement from the AIPAC executive directorship in 1974. A native of New Brunswick, Mr. Kenen began his long career of lobbying in support of a Jewish state in 1943 in New York as director of the American Emergency Com- mittee on Zionist Affairs. He was the Jewish Agency's in- formation director at the United Nations in 1947 and 1948 and then in 1949 was a member of the first Israeli delegation to the United Nations. He moved to Washington in 1951 and established the American Zionist Committee to lobby Congress in support of Israel. three years later the committee became AIPAC, the only official lobby for Israel in the United States. Dr. George Leib A pioneering activist in Alpha Omega and related dental movements, Dr. George Leib who died March 28 at age 85, had important roles here in B'nai B'rith and the Zionist movement. With his brother, Dr. Sidney Leib, and as a legacy from his father who attended the first World Zionist Congress, he was devoted to the efforts of the Zionist Organization of Detroit. He was a life-long participant in B'nai B'rith af- fairs and in Pisgah Lodge with his brother, the late Sam Leib. A graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., Dr. Leib did post- graduate work at the Univer- sity of Michigan Dental School. He was the first emeritus life member of Alpha Omega as well as an officer and fund raiser. For many years, he served on the executive coun- cil and board of trustees of the Detroit Alumni chapter, which in 1964 gave him its first award "for outstanding service." He was business manager for the Alpha Omega News from 1931 to 1940. He became the business manager of the Alpha Omegan, the international journal of Alpha Omega, in 1952. Dr. Leib was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan State Dental Association and the Detroit District Dental Society. The society gave him its highest award, the cer- tificate of merit, in 1959. For 14 years, Dr. Leib was chair- man of technical exhibits for the dental society's mid- autumn meetings. He raised nearly $175,000 for the socie- ty through the sale of exhibit space. He was past president of Pisgah Lodge of B'nai B'rith. He held membership in the Zionist Organization of America, American Jewish Congress, Moslem Temple, Scottish Rite, Perfection Lodge of th Masons, Shrine Club, Adat Shalom Synagogue and Hannah Schloss Old Timers. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
