Israel Honors
Tirade Pacts

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel in-
tends to honor its trade
agreements with the 12
member-states of the Euro-
pean Community, Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres told
the Knesset, despite the
Parliament of Europe's
refusal to ratify them.
Peres last week spoke in
response to seven agenda mo-
tions denouncing resolutions
adopted by the Strasbourg-
based parliament, which
serves as the E.C.'s legislative
body. The motions condemned
Israel for inhumane treat-
ment of Palestinians in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Peres called the resolutions
"a blow to the peace process,"
but insisted Israel would keep
its side of the economic bar-
gain with the E.C. He noted
that Israel purchased Euro-
pean goods valued at $6
billion a year and had a $2.5
million trade deficit with the
Europeans.
Although the agreements
were signed with all 12 E.C.
members last year, after two
years of negotiations, the
European Parliament voted
overwhelmingly against rati-
fying them. According to
parliament sources, the
agreements will now have to
be renegotiated from scratch.

Twin Supporters
To Try Again

Berkeley, Calif. (JTA) —
Supporters of a defeated pro-
position for this city to twin
with a Palestinian refuge
camp say they will resubmit
the proposal to the city coun-
cil or attempt to place it on
the November ballot as a
referendum.
The city council rejected the
plan 6-3 during a rancorous
meeting last Tuesday.
The measure would have
extablished a sister-city rela-
tionship with Jabalya, a
refugee camp of some 60,000
on the Gaza Strip. It was pro-
posed by the city's advisory
peace and justice commission.

Labor Party
Re-elects Peres

Jerusalem (JTA) — At a
special session of the Labor
Party's central committee,
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres was re-elected unani-
mously as leader of the Labor
Party and thus its candidate
for prime minister in the next
elections.
His re-election last week
was, in fact, a formality, as he
was unopposed.
