`THE UN BE ATA BLE DE A LE R " "THE U N BE ATA BLE DE A L S '

28111 Telegraph Rd. & 1-696 Across from Tel-12 Mall

Everyone is confused — star-
ting with the prime minister.
"I am not serving in the ter-
ritories. My experience is
therefore slight. If I am
posted there — I feel need for
support in order for me to
follow my orders — in all my
life I never beat anyone out-
side of my little brother. I
hear from friends the
legitimization not to follow
orders."
For Mordecai, the father of
a soldier, memers of the IDF
are "doing what is necesary
with honor and bravery,
especially when it is done
against their inner will.
There is no way out, other
than a quieting of the
situation.
"On the other hand, I would
like to point out that whoever
did not see this process, when
the fuse was light in 1948,
was blind. This is one of the
situations where the
dynamics are much stronger
than the strength of any
political establishment that
would try to control them in
the directions they see fit.
"There will be two im-
mediate results of the current
situation. One will be sadly,
increased yerida (Israelis
leaving Israel), and the other,
happily, new approaches and
thoughts to get to a process
that will lead to some sort of
solution.
"It's difficult for me," said
Louise, mother of an IDF
soldier. "Our screams are
directed toward different
directions. Not toward our
sons, the soldiers. It's difficult
for me to say things, but I
must say them.
"I remember 1967 when I
was still new and green in
Israel. It was the evening of
Independence Day after the
Six-Day-War. On the lawn
before the entrance to the din-
ing hall was a map of the set-
tlements — of the new, enlarg-
ed Israel, standing up and il-
luminated. On a screen were
films of our pilots' victories
over the Syrian air force. I sat
and cried. Now we see the
results of a process that we
should have realized. I scream
at myself, and those my age
and older.
"Last week I went for a
walk with my son Nir, who is
five. Blue skies. Freedom.
Light. The boy rolled and ran
like a bird. God — what's hap-
pening now in the territories?
Who can suffer the contradic-
tions in a geographical
distance so small?
"Nir sat on my lap and said
to me: 'Mother, I don't want
them to throw stones at me.'
I feel torment, anger, frustra-
tion, and bottomless sadness.
My feeling of frustration I
would vent in a large

demonstration: thousands
standing in silence — against
the maelstrom reality, and
this screaming perversity."
Yehudit, a soldier's mother,
said "I feel a terrible churn-
ing inside. Not just because
my son is a soldier. I listened
to a son that just came back
from the territories. The need
to listen and talk about the
current events was mutual,
but at the end of the discus-
sion, only to say that it's terri-
ble — I didn't know the words.
I think that words and
demonstrations only confuse
the soldiers, and perhaps it
will demoralize them, and
they are shackled with doubts
in any event.
"I feel that we are sending
our sons to a task that is not
the top priority (Gaza is not

important for the continuing
existence of Israel). Thus I
cannot look in their eyes and
justify the orders. In the
words of the Poet Natan
Alterman:

`It is permissible for a nation
to order the task
If in its heart it really
believes
That straight in their eyes it
will be able to look
And justify the orders it
gave.' "
"I am in a quandry," said
Moshe, the father of an IDF
officer. "I have no quick
answers, despite my position
in the army. No army in the
world acts in manner as
morally acceptable, as our
soldiers in Shomron and
Gaza, and as we acted with
the civilians in Lebanon.
There are no moral wars.
Morality starts when you
meet up with the civilians.
We have to support our
soldiers and tell them that
their actions are the most
morally correct that exist. No
army in the world would wage
this action as Zahal is doing.
"The worst possible situa-
tion would be if our sons went
down the road Sunday morn-
ings, on their return to the ar-
my and their units, with
blame and shame hung upon
their necks.
"We should not draw con-
clusions from the one-sided
pictures on the television, nor
from the moral lectures of the
United States — that would
be the most immoral act of
all."
