she rather likes my stuff," he
confides, "but when she's
being given a present, she likes
the other stuff."
Though nobody, especially
Lane, pretends his stones are
real, he employs the best
materials available, usually
Austrian crystals, sometimes
German glass for (fake)
emeralds, rubies and sapphires.
His convincing looking top
quality 'pearls' are produced in
the U.S. while the tiwas' come
from Japan. The frosted glass,
`turquoise,' corals' and 'ivory'
are plastic and from U.S.
factories, the names of which
he'll never divulge.
"Superb" is how Diana
Vreeland describes the design
and workmanship. When
Vreeland's own costume jewelry
collection was offered at
Sotheby's last fall, included in it
were 'vintage' Kenneth Jay
Lane pieces.
Lane is very much at home in
New York City. Once married for
two years to an English woman
named Nicky Waymouth with
whom he remains good friends,
he is currently single. He lives
in a Stanford White-designed
duplex on lower Park Avenue
within walking distance of his
office and showrooms. The
world of opera, ballet, parties
and benefits affords him the
opportunity to be with good
friends.
"Kenny is a contributor in his
own way, he doesn't take up
space," says well known social
figure, Jerome Zipkin. "He is
bright, cultivated and always fun
to be around, a good friend
who fits into all groups. People
are always delighted to see
him."
Even when he's being totally
frank, people seem to accept
his good humored
outspokenness.
Lest we mention the time
Jacqueline Onassis
commissioned him to copy a
necklace Aristotle had
purchased for her and Lane
