For years he has offered a relative a paid-for trip to Europe and enjoys gifting relatives with his jewelry. When Birmingham cousins Carol (Altman) and Steve Bromberg vacationed in Santa Fe, he arranged a luncheon invitation for them to the Duke and Duchess of Bedford's residence there. Kanter talks about Lane's first visits back home after he made New York his permanent address. "I remember when Kenny would visit Detroit. He'd go to a party wearing a pin-striped suit with a red tie and red handkerchief. 'Who is that?' people would ask. They used to laugh. He looked so New York and everyone here looked so square. I'd get upset but he'd say: 'Don't worry, (I'll) show them.' " Undeniably he did show them for when he made his entry into the costume jewelry industry, his designs were smashing, his timing opportune. After college graduation, Lane worked for Vogue magazine's art department for one and a half years, spent another year as a hungry artist, then several years in shoe design. "I hadn't planned on going into the jewelry business at all. I was designing shoes for Arnold Scaasi and did some things for his jewelry collection. There was an article in The New York Times on the earrings (I designed) and within one month, I was selling to every big store on Fifth Avenue." The year was 1963, the year both robbery and insurance rates rose. People traveled more and those who owned fabulously expensive jewelry were afraid to take it with them on trips.
