places. (Relatives) had a lodge
at Burt Lake. I liked all that part
of Michigan.
"I used to love the jazz clubs
on John R. I also loved
ushering at the Cass and
Shubert Theaters with my
cousin Barbara (Seyburn) Kaye
(of Atlanta).
When the internationally
respected designer does return
to his hometown, it's usually for
a personal appearance at Roz
& Sherm at Bloomfield Plaza.
"I think Roz & Sherm is one
of the best stores in the country.
It's very with it and it's got a
wonderful spirit," he explains.
Roz Becker, who has carried
Lane merchandise for over five
years, thinks "his jewelry
appeals to a very chic lady. It
doesn't seem to have an age."
She adds that his craftmanship
is top quality and often real
gems can be mistaken for his
work.
"On our 30th anniversary,
Sherm gave me a diamond and
onyx art deco pin designed by
a Birmingham jeweler. A woman
approached me at a party, took
in the pin and said: 'My, aren't
we all bedecked in Kenneth Jay
Lane.' "
Joyce Cohn, wife of U.S.
Federal Court Judge Avern
Cohn, had a somewhat different
experience.
"I have a strand of (Kenneth
Lane) huge 'baroque pearls'
and people who should know
better come up to me and say,
`I love your pearls.' They are
pearls that look like they cost
$250,000. I wouldn't buy the
real and I have fun with these."
Marilyn (Kates) Kanter, Lane's
first cousin who is a jewelry
department manager at Roz &
Sherm, mentions that "Kenny
always has time for the family in
New York and Detroit." That
means getting together with his
cousins, his aunt and uncle,
Florence and George Seyburn,
and another aunt, (Kanter's
mother) Adele Kates. "His
success," Kanter assures,
