women because it's the only at-
tractive reflection of herself in
the mainstream media," says
Hara Estroff Varano, editorial
director of the insert found in
Vogue magazine twice a year.
With a circulation of 2 1/2 million
readers, Fashion Plus and its
new Fashion Plus newsletter
provide information about the
latest styles.
"The large size woman has
more freedom today in dressing
because of her spirit," Marano
says from her Vanhattan office.
"Fashion these days depends
more on the attitude of the
wearer. She must develop her
own style."
Carole Shaw, editor of BBW:

Fashions For The Large Size
Woman, feels her publication,

started in 1979 and with a cur-
rent circulation of 300,000, has
witnessed some wonderful
chances. We broke all the
rules," says Shaw from her
Tarzana, California office. "We
showed that prints, color and
proportion were just as impor-
tant to the large size woman as
her smaller sister."
Alice Ansfield, editor of
Radiance magazine, based in
San Francisco, caters more to
topical issues than to fashion.
This bi-annual publication car-
ries stories like "growing up fat,"
"travel problems for large
women" and "large women in
sports."
Ansfield feels the variety of
topics they've covered for the
past four years just skims the
surface. "By the readership
response, they can't believe
what we cover," she says.
"Readers always write in and
say, 'Thank God I found
you.' "
