Even your jeweler won't know!

her work. Currently, her collec-
tion is carried by Cahrivari,
Diane B., Bloomingdale's and
Ann Taylor, to name a few. For
the present, Demeulemeester
designs only womenswear but
hopes to debut a menswear
collection next year.
Demeulemeester, her Belgian
photographer husband, and
their two-year old son live in the
only house in Belgium de-
signed by the famous architect
and painter, Le Corbusier. The
house, built in the 1920's, is still
one of the most avant garde
buildings in the country.
Walter Van Beirendonck is by
far the most extreme of the Six
of Antwerp group. He started in
womenswear but after three col-
lections, drifted into menswear.
Now, Van Beirendonck
specializes in outrageous
fashion statements for men and
boys.

Dries Van Noten, the best
known and most commercial
of the "first generation" of
designers, plans each
collection around a theme.

In the past, his themes have
ranged from fairy tale
characters to "Daredevil Dad-
dies," with romper suits and em-
broidered baby's harnesses to
fit a man-sized chest. A jacket
boasts a padded belly for an in-
stant beer-gut silhouette. "For
me," he says, "it's important to
keep fashion funny and fun."
Van Beirendonck's specialty is
coming up with completely
original ideas — making things
that have never been seen
before. The inspiration for his
current collection is Jules Verne,
one of the great "futuristic"
thinkers of his time, combined
with the Flintstones and African
tribes.
Van Beirendonck's collections
do not have much commercial
appeal, which makes it difficult
