SWIRLS OF SOFT PASTELS "Downsizing is the biggest difference in casual clothes this spring," says Rob Goudsmit, owner of Cinderella's Castle in West Bloomfield. "Proportions are smaller. Our T-shirts are not 16 IN STYLE quite as oversized; our short outfits are soft and simple, with straight lines." New this season is the cropped top, a wide, square top that reaches just below the waistline. Worn with cotton city shorts or the popular elastic waist boxer shorts, the cropped top looks sporty and clean. This will be another hot ID# season. ID# won rave reviews from storeowners and kids last spring with its comfy cotton separates and kooky inside-out patterns. This spring ID# is all soft, cool sherbet pastels. Peach, bubblegum, lemon and lime are played out in stripes and writing on stark white cotton. This is the season for pastel stripes and soft, subtle plaids. Elaine Siegel, owner of Bleu Moon in Hunter's Ridge, predicts that Guess shorts with a patchwork motif will be popular this spring. The lightweight, softly snow washed boxer-length shorts have a light blue and white stiped bottom cuff and pastel- trimmed pockets and belt loops. The new slenderness in silhouette has made room for the biker pant, as another option for shorts. Bleu Moon shows colorful Lycra, skintight biker shorts that reach either right above or right below the knee. Tie dyed separates continue to be popular. "We can barely keep up with the demand for our cotton, pastel tie dyed T-shirts and skinny leggings," says Goudsmit. "We are also finding that swirl dyes are the hot new item."
