"The collection and exhibition
provide not merely an insight
into local history, but into the
lives of everyday, middle class
people as well," said guest
curator of the exhibit, Gail
Alterman. "It is, therefore,
important from a designer
standpoint as well as
sociologically."
"As the first exhibit we wanted
to have something that could
show the range and breadth of
the collection," said Lyon. "We
purposefully chose a theme that
was very broad and gave us an
opportunity to show something
different."
According to Lyon this exhibit
is not only the first in Detroit, but
one of the largest costume
collections in the Midwest.
"By and large the majority of
the pieces are in excellent
condition," she said. "Although
we did some conservation on
some of the pieces."
She also noted that some
bustles and petticoats were
designed and mannequins were
padded individually to fit certain
dresses.
