their product lines into
shampoos, conditioners, rinses,
setting gels and special perm
solutions for men.
Treatment for dealing with
male pattern baldness, the term
for a receding hairline or
spreading bald spot, is
expanding the men's skin care
industry even further. More men
are taking advantage of proven
techniques in hair restoration
including hair transplantation,
scalp reduction and non-surgical
methods.
Hair transplantation surgery is
a method by which a bald area
is covered with hair follicles from
the side of the patient's head so
that continuous hair growth
takes place. Patients make
several visits for the surgery
which may take as long as three
hours.
In scalp reduction, a surgeon
loosens the skin on top of the
head, pulls the hair-bearing
sections in from the sides and
back and removes a section of
the bald scalp. Because the
remaining scalp becomes elastic
after a few weeks, the procedure
can be repeated until virtually
no bald spot remains. Hair plug
transplants are then used to fill
in the front.
Dr. Martin Tessler has been
performing this surgery for over
12 years.
"In the early 80s, it was still
new and few people were
interested," says Tessler "Today,
most of my practice consists of
scalp reductions. Men want to
look their best and realize they
have options."
The word is still out in hair
growth formulas such as
monoxidyl and other products.
But there is no doubt in
anyone's mind that some will be
approved soon and quickly
placed on the market providing
another source of expansion for
the skin care business.
