UHS Reshapes Its
Curriculum For Fall

The Community Jewish
High School, a division of
United Hebrew Schools, is in
the process of restructuring
and reshaping its curriculum.
Next fall, students will have
six new options from which to
choose. Each track will be of-
fered on Sundays from 9
a.m.-1 p.m., and Tuesdays
from 4 to 7 p.m. The options
are: Hebrew ulpan, intensive
learning track, creative arts,
paraprofessional — teacher's
aide, and community service
and family study.
Sunday mornings will be
devoted to their chosen track,
and Tuesdays will be devoted
to Jewish history and text
study. This will be followed by
a light supper or snack and a
special presentation.
The Hebrew ulpan is a four-
year track intended for
serious language students
who wish to participate in a
four-hour weekly Hebrew
ulpan.
The intensive learning
track is a four-year program
intended for those with a
strong Hebraica and Judaica
background who are capable
of studying Jewish textual
source material in the
original.
The creative arts track is a
four-year program intended
for students who wish to fuse
the arts and Jewish culture.
The paraprofessional track
includes two components, a
teacher's aide program and
community service program.
The community service
component is for students
who want to learn about the
Jewish community and par-
ticipate actively in a number
of social service agencies.
The family study track is
intended for families who
wish to study and explore
Jewish issues together on
Sundays. This is a joint ven-
ture with Jewish Experiences
for Families.
All students participating
in the Hebrew ulpan, inten-
sive paraprofessional and
creative arts track and fami-
ly study will be required to at-
tend on Tuesdays at 4 to 7
p.m. Courses during the
weekday will include: Modern
Jewish History and
Literature, Halacha — Bet
Din, the Jewish People's
Court, Responsa Literature,
Israel and Zionism,
Holocaust, Midrash, History,
Hebrew and Development of
the Siddur, and Bible.
Following formal instruc-
tion on Tuesdays, a special
program will be planned.
Students will be exposed to a

variety of topics and per-
sonalities including: Where
Judaism and Christianity
Differ; Dating, Sex and Mar-
riage; Exotic Jewish Com-
munities; Yavneh, Detroit's
Sister City through Project
Renewal; Terrorism; Arabs
and Jews; and Israeli Folk
Dancing.
Other special programs dur-
ing the year will include: A
Thronto trip for ninth graders,
two Shabbat retreats at Camp
Tamarack, a semester in
