Students See 'Prospect'
For Jewish Periodical
SUSAN LUDMER-GLIEBE
Special to The Jewish News
U
ntil earlier this
year Yale, Princeton,
UCLA and the
University of Minnesota all
had something that the Uni-
versity of Michigan lacked —
a Jewish student periodical.
But with the publication of
Prospect — the Jewish Stu-
dent Journal at the Universi-
ty of Michigan, which had its
inaugural issue distributed
last month, the University of
Michigan joins a handful of
colleges that publish student-
run Jewish periodicals.
A number of people on and
off the campus felt that it was
an idea whose time had come,
and then some.
"Given the size and diversi-
ty of the Jewish student corn-
munity we needed a forum in
which [the students] could
discuss issues of concern and
interest," says Joseph
Kohane, assistant director of
the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foun-
dation at Michigan.
Andy Weine, 24, student,
research assistant and now
editor of Prospect, agrees.
"The University of Michigan
has the third largest number
of Jewish students," he says.
"This Jewish student com-
munity deserves its own voice
— in print."
The publication of Prospect
didn't happen in a vacuum.
According to Weine, other
Jewish student publications
were perused for ideas on
layout, subject-matter and
editorial orientation.
"I got a picture of a univer-
sity version of the blending of
Moment and Tikkun," Weine
says referring to two of the
more successful and in-
teresting national Jewish
publications.
Like the other student-run
publications, Prospect has an
essay format, though its 21
pages also contains prose and
poetry. As for its subject mat-
ter, Alex Cigale, associate
editor, mentions the three

issue is how we
handle the
diversity of
opinion."
overriding themes: Jewish in-
terest, Jewish context, Jewish
concern. "These are open to
defining because there's such
a variety in the Jewish com-
munity," says Cigale.
In what ways does Prospect
hope to distinguish itself from
other similar publications?
"We'll regularly publish on
the Holocaust and on Israel,"
says Weine. "I think these are
two very important pillars for
Jewish students."
Magazine staffers also hope
