La Mirage—Southfield 358-0830 64 FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 1988 oronto — The kosher food and Jewish Life Expo in Miami Beach this winter had a clear message for its observers: the kosher food market is grow- ing by leaps and bounds. The theme of the expo was "Kosher: A Market On The Move." Participating exhibitors in- cluded kosher food manufac- turers, distributors and marketers, as well as sup- pliers of Judaica, art, music, books and religious articles. Jewish and Israeli service organizations were also represented. The event at- tracted 40,000 visitors. Ten years ago, only about 1,000 products were certified as kosher. Today the kosher market has more than 16,000 products, which are produced by about 2,500 companies. The kosher market is now worth $1 billion. By 1990, the number of kosher products is expected to be over 20,000, with the dolllar value of the market going as high as $5 billion. The two kosher food expos held so far have elicited such interest that the third Inter- national Kosher Foods Expo is scheduled for June 17 to 21 in New York City. It is plann- ed to be four times larger than the first expo held in New York, when many people had to be turned away because of overcrowding. The importance of the kosher market was acknowledged by the exhibits of some of North America's most prominent food manufacturers such as Sanka, General Foods, Seagram's and Heinz. Florida's major super- market chain, Publix, had one of the largest displays in the expo. The company stated that in addition to the Jewish consumers, many non-Jews prefer kosher products, because of the perception that kosher is synonymous with better quality. A large percentage of kosher food consumers today are not Jewish. They are vegetarians, Moslems, Seventh Day Adventists and people who for various other reasons prefer kosher. The many booths at the ex- po offered free samples of tacos, tofu, all-natural frozen fruit bars and numerous other traditional and new delicacies. The exhibits show- T OPEN HOUSE/TOUR For Information Call Kosher Food Market Is Experiencing Boom ed that kosher food no longer means just blintzes and knishes. Among the foreign ex- hibitors at the expo was a kosher food manufacturer from Paris, France, who has started an export business because of the potential of the North American market. Kosher Italian cuisine was being promoted by another company. This company sees the interest in kosher food as a back-to-Jewish-roots move- ment. "People are looking for answers, and being kosher is part of it," said a company representative. Besides shrimp and lobster substitutes, there were five varieties of hors d'oeuvres from Bernan Foods (stuffed mushrooms, beef turnovers, bagel dogs). Empire Kosher Poultry displayed pizza Siciliana, borekas and cooked turkey breasts. Of course, no Jewish party or fair can be just for mun- ching foods. "I came here looking for a Jewish hus- band," admitted Nadine Taylor of Miami Beach. •••mmil NEWS U.S. Seeks To Bar Nazis Washington (JTA) — The Justice Department asked the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Monday to place the names of 9,800 suspected former con- centration camp guards on its watch list. Those individuals, whom the department determined assisted or otherwise par- ticipated in Nazi-sponsored persecution, would be barred from entering the United States under the so-called Holtzman Amendment. The names were compiled from captured war records, post-World War II wanted and detention lists and extradi- tion requests. Shoah Lessons New York — To assist members of the U.S. Armed Forces in organizing Holocaust education pro- grams and ceremonies, the Department of Defense is distributing a 96-page book entitled Days of Remem- brance produced with the assistance of the Interna- tional Center for Holocaust Studies of the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.
