THE BIRMINGHAM TEMPLE presents AN EXCLUSIVE PROGRAM "THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN DILEMMA" FEATURING "AN ISRAELI PERSPECTIVE" MOSHE FOX but in gold on a blue background. Since the "great change," there have been numerous minor changes, such as the introduction of the rank of brigadier general and lieute- nant general in 1971, along with additional ranks since then. Class-A uniforms, man- datory for all soldiers not in field positions, are olive green for the ground forces and beige for the navy and air force. The navy has an all white dress uniform for for- mal occasions. Except for combat units, the beret for men is green and for women, black, with the brass insignia of the respective corps. All soldiers in combat units have a red background behind their corps insignia. The beret for men and women in the air force is blue-grey, with silver insignia. Women in the navy wear a black beret with gold insignia while men who do not hold officer's rank wear the traditional sailor's cap. Since the establishment of the IDF, the armored and ar- tillery corps have worn black berets, like their counterparts in the British army. In the 1950s, the paratroopers were issued red berets. Over the years, the Golani infantry brigade received brown berets, combat engineering grey berets, and the newly re- established 'Givati infantry brigade was issued purple berets in 1986. These berets must be earned, usually by running a grueling overnight stretcher march, which signifies that the recruit has passed a certain stage in basic training. There are dozens of dif- ferent shoulder tags which can either represent the soldier's corps or the specific unit, division or command. Frequently the tags are sym- bolic of the specific corps, such as the caduceus of the medical corps, or the balanc- ed scales of the judge ad- vocate general's corps. As in the British army, in- structors wear a braided cord hanging from the left epaulet, the color usually representing the soldier's individual corps. Most non-combat enlisted soliders wear a small black and red patch on the right shirt front. signifying their specific job, such as secretary, graphic artist or driver. While other armies may have a more polished ap- pearance, the IDF continues to encourage an understated, unified army in which in- dividual conviction and in- itiative make extravagant pomp unnecessary. Earlier, Israeli jets bombed targets in two refugee camps east of Sidon. Targets of last week's raid were bases used by terrorists to plan and launch attacks on Israel. Sources in Beirut said the raid on the Shouf moun- tain area southeast of the Lebanese capital hit bases of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a ter- rorist group headed by George Habash that broke away from the mainstream Palestine Liberation Organi- zation years ago. The sources said the target area is also the turf of Walid Jumblatt's Druse militia. Its bases as well as a multi-story building used by the Popular Front were hit. The attack was reportedly in retaliation for two Katyusha rocket attacks on Galilee recently. No one was hurt in the rocket attacks. The announcement, made last week through the Inter- national Tennis Association, ended weeks of uncertainty over the contest. The Indian association had suggested playing Israel at a "neutral venue," because of the unrest in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But both Israel and the tennis association objected. The Indians agreed to play in Israel if their government approved and their safety was guaranteed. Apparently, both conditions have been met. The last India-Israel tennis match, played in 1987, ended in a 5-0 victory for India. A DESIGN STUDIO in Bloomfield Hl 788 industrial Court MTDMIT ICIAIIOU kIrtA/0 AA
