the killing in Bethlehem has
produced an entirely new
dimension to the conflict,
radically changing the nature
of the confrontation between
Israel and the Palestinians.
An indication of the grim
mood in Jerusalem was pro-
vided by Defense Minister
Yitzhak Rabin when he told
the Israeli cabinet this week
that he had relaxed some
restrictions on the use of
firearms by soldiers.
In the past, Israeli soldiers
were permitted to open fire at
Palestinians who threw petrol
bombs only if they were in-
jured in the attacks or if their
vehicles were set alight. Now,
he declared, they may open
fire if they can simply iden-
tify their assailants.
It is instructive to note that
the decision was not prompt-
ed by the killing of Sergeant
Katz. Indeed, the announce-
ment of the modification in
the standing orders came at
almost precisely the moment
the bullets in Bethlehem
were being fired.
The echo of those shots will
continue to be heard in Israel
for a long time to come.

Thick Wallets Linked
To Low Back Pain

the finest expressions of love come from ...

If you habitually carry a
thick wallet in your hip
pocket, you may be letting
yourself in for more trouble
than you realize.
Big bills
can be a
pain in the
neck, but a
big wallet
can be
equally
painful in
the low
back. When
you count
up the num-
ber of credit cards, business
cards and other assorted slips
of paper that the average man
carries in his wallet, it
becomes obvious that wallet
doesn't have to be full of
money to cause problems.
When you carry a thick
wallet in your hip pocket, it
causes a wedge in the low back
that results in displacement of
the lumbar vertebrae. This
creates pressure on the lumbar
discs and the lumbar node
plexus.
Pain, stiffness and soreness

may be the first warnings of a
low back problem which, left
untreated, could develop into
sciatica.
If men who carry thick
wallets in their back pockets
would simply cease doing so,
they might be able to relieve
some of their low back pain on
a self-help basis. If they still ex-
perience low back problems,
then I would advise them to
seek help from a Doctor of
Chiropractic.

Distortion in the low back
can lead to further difficulties
since it applies stress to the
mid-back as well. This can
cause a corresponding distor-
tion in the thoracic spine and
might even result in neck and
shoulder problems.
Doctors of Chiropractic dai-
ly see patients with a variety of
complaints that can be traced
to spinal misalignments. They
are trained to deal with such
problems once they exist, but
they are equally interested in
helping to prevent them before
they arise. If they can offer a
simple solution to a specific
problem, they will do so.
