Philip Birnbaum, Siddur Author New York — Dr. Philip Birn- baum, a renowned author of Jewish prayerbooks, died March 19 at age 83. Born in Poland, Dr. Birn- baum came to the U.S. in 1923. He received a Ph.D. degree from Dropsie College. He was a scholar and author whose translation of the synagogue liturgy has sold 300,000 copies since it was first published in 1949. Among Dr. Birnbaum's 30 books are The Concise Jewish Bible, The English En- cyclopedia of Jewish Concepts, and Fluent Hebrew Maimonides' Code of Law and Ethics. In 1986, Dr. Birnbaum received Yeshiva University's Mordechai Ben-David Award for literature and the Body of Works Citation from the Jewish Book Council. I N EWS 1" French Jewish News Bulletin Paris (JTA) — A French- language daily news bulletin based on the worldwide ser- vices of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was laun- ched Monday. The four-page publication, titled Jour J. (The Jewish Day) and subtitled Jewish Telegraphic Letter, will appear five days a week. It is owned by a private company and edited by veteran journalist Samuel Minsk.
