restaurant. Then the screen-
ing takes place. The numbers
must be equal, the age groups
match, and the sociological
and intellectual level equal
to keep stimulation at its
height. Subsequent dating
right through to marriage
has resulted in this kind of
scenario.
Synagogues of all persua-
sions hold parties, quiz shows,
dances and cultural discus-
sions. They start with age
groups of around 15 to 18, and
reach the dizzy 65 plus for
classical musical evenings
and talks on solemn affairs
related to Jewish matters.
There is almost always a
fund-raising reason for the
events: money raised this way
is to support hospitals in
Israel, for Soviet Jewry, or
even to pay for the roof of the
synagogue.
On the whole, younger sin-
gles tend to see attendance at
synagogue functions as an ad-
mission of social failure. They
expect to find lame "luck"
(losers) there, and equate
themselves as losers. It is fair
to say that in the younger age
groups, the sexes are more
equally divided; it is when
one considers people over 45
that the variance arises:
there tends to be more wi-
dows, and divorced men in
these groups seem to search
out younger mates.
Leo Marcus has been mar-
ried twice to Jewish women:
the first was a short-lived af-
fair in Israel, the second
longer but still unsatisfac-
tory. The couple stayed to-
gether for a few years — there
were no children — then di-
vorced. Leo, a college lecturer
is 56 now and has been look-
ing for female companionship
for the last four years.
"I suppose I have tried
everything," he admits. "My
background was traditionally
Orthodox, kosher home and
candles on the table Friday
nights, but I have moved
away from that scene now.
The women I met at the
venues (places) I tried had
similar backgrounds to me,
but there were barriers. I live
a reasonably middle-class life,
have varied interests, in-
tellectual rather than trivial,
and it struck me after a
while: who needs a Jewish
princess whose values are
governed by what you can
give them, the emphasis be-
ing on your status and their
lifestyle, which has to be bet-
ter than the next door prin-
cess. I've now found that non-
Jewish women I meet in bars
have more to offer. They are
not so much governed by ma-
terial considerations and
seem to think compatibility is
