GRAZING'S OUT
GREAT DINNERS

The Glorious

BRUNCH

ARE IN AT

found herself with a busy
schedule.
"I was put in touch with a
family whose young daughter
had leukemia. She was too ill
to have a big birthday party
for friends, so I went to her
house and entertained her.
She later talked to a psycho-
logical nurse she was seeing
at William Beaumont Hospi-
tal, and the nurse asked if I
would consider entertaining
the pediatrics patients in the
hospital."
Schiffman's family of pup-
pets grew to include Femur
the Frog, Ivy, and Mama and
Baby Bear.
"I incorporated the chil-
dren's ailments into my rou-
tine. Femur the Frog talked
about how he fell off his Big
Wheels and broke his leg. Ivy
discussed that she got her
medicine and food through
her I.V. The Bears were a non-
threatening way to discuss
chemo treatments."
Schiffman remembers that
some of the patients were too
ill to come to the ward in
their wheelchairs or with
their casts, so she would go
put on individualized presen-
tations at their bedsides.
"I look at their faces, their
enjoyment, and that's why I
did this. It took them away
from their pain and their
solitude."
The birth of Corey Schiff-
man two years ago, and a
subsequent move to Novi
from their home in Oak Park,
meant a re-structuring of
Schiffman's priorities.
"I could work at Temple
Emanu-El more days, and
was flattered to be asked, but
I want to devote as much time
as I can to my son. My per-
formances mean giving up
weekend socializing with my
son and husband, and I often
have weeknight party as-
signments, as well."

She often has as many as
four or five scheduled Satur-
day and Sunday perform-
ances, and credits her hus-
band's willingness to take
over as mother and dad dur-
ing those engagements as be-
ing able to offer their son the
best of both worlds.
Schiffman admires enter-
tainers who write music for
movement, citing such favor-
ites as Arlo Guthrie, Jr., Jim
Henson and Raffi.

She hopes to organize a
songbook of catchy tunes on
themes like robots, holidays,
sports and growing up issues.
For now, Schiffman's au-
diences get the best of the
various melodies she's men-
tally catalogued and which
seem as effortless as they are
spontaneous.
