shortness of some people's
memories. Did we have peace
when we did not have these
territories? . . . Do they want
us to go back to a situation
which would inevitably invite
another such attempt?"
He praised Shultz and
Reagan for their pro-Israel
policies.
And, he added, "Only those
who must shed their blood
can decide what risks to take
in the pursuit of peace."

date when the unrest in the
territories will end.
Yet he said that the
violence could be stopped, and
in only days, if Israel were to
act with any real force. "But
the Arab leadership knows
that we are not going to do it,"
he said.
Gazit offered a colorful pic-
ture of Israel's leaders. He
described Shamir as a man
shaped by his participation in
the underground and his 20
years with the Mossad.
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres, Shamir's partner in the
coalition but adversary on
most issues, is a man "much
more forthcoming on com-
promise," Gazit said.
And while noting Shamir's
upper hand because he does,
at this time, serve as Israel's
top official, Gazit said that
the Prime Minister's public
positions on the territories
are not necessarily shared by
most Israelis.
He said that he believes a
full 80 percent of Israel's
population would agree to
relinquishing the West Bank
and Gaza if the Jewish
character and the security of
Israel were guaranteed.

Get Exit Visas

New York (JTA) — Two long-
term refuseniks, Natasha
Khasina and Marat Osnis,
have been given permission
to emigrate. Khasina, of
Moscow, is an 11-year re-
fusenik. Osnis, of Chernovt-
sky, has waited 16 years. Both
were informed by Soviet
authorities that they and
their families could emigrate
to Israel, Soviet Jewry groups
reported last Tuesday.
Both Khasina and Osnis
had been repeatedly denied
the right to emigrate, based
on alleged possession of

"state secrets." Khasina is a
mathematician specializing
in computer programming
and Osnis is a computer
engineer.
