May 1 Solidarity Walk
Chairman Is Named

Dr. Maurice S. Opperer has
been named chairman of We
Walk As One, the solidarity
walk sponsored by the Jewish
Welfare Federation and the
Israel 40th Anniversary
Committee.
The 4-mile walk will begin
at 11 a.m. May 1 on the
grounds of the Jewish Com-
munity Campus in West
Bloomfield. Following
registration at Fleischman
Residence, participants will
walk to the Jewish Communi-
ty Center and down Drake
Road to Temple Israel, where
they will view a brief pro-
gram. From there, they will
walk back to the Center.
Letters from Federation
President Dr. Conrad L. Giles
and Dr. Opperer will go out
next week to all synagogues,
agencies and organizations
affiliated with the Jewish
Community Council, inviting
their participation in the
Walk.
Opperer serves on Federa-
tion's Culture and Education
Division and is a former co-
chairman of the Dental Sec-
tion of the Allied Jewish

Campaign's Professional
Health Division.
Alan Yost will serve as an
adviser on the Walk. He was
a co-chairman of the Walk
and Community Fair in 1985.
Associate chairmen for the

thal and Arnold Weiner.

In conjunction with its new
series, "The Culture of
Jewish Modernity," Wayne
State University Press is
hosting an international sym-
posium on "The Playground
of Textuality: Modern Jewish
Intellectuals and the
Horizons of Interpretation?'
The symposium, exploring
issues raised by 19th and
20th Century Jewish intellec-
tuals, begins with a public
session 7:30 p.m. Sunday at
the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center. Paul
Mendes-Flohr of Hebrew
University will speak on
"The Lost World of Twentieth
Century European Jewish In-
tellectuals." There will be a
screening of Richard
Kostelanetz' short film, A
Berlin Lost, followed by a
reception. The opening ses-
sion is co-sponsored by the
Jewish Community Center.
Working sessions will take
place Monday and Tuesday at
the Rackham Memorial
Center in Detroit. Par-
ticipants include Timothy
Bahti, University of
Michigan; Remi Brague,
University of Dijon; Michael
Fishbane, Brandeis Universi-
ty; Kenneth Frieden, Emory
University; Marilyn Fries,

University of Michigan;
Stephane Moses, Hebrew
University; Laurence Rickels,

to be published this summer.
