MARCH n 1988 Gabriel Bolkosky, violinist, Miriam Bolkosky, cellist, and Andrew Song, pianist, were the winners of the first Michigan Young Musicians Competition at the Jewish Community Center. Gabriel Bolkosky is study- ing with Michael Avsharian and is the winner of many awards and competitions. He has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and community orchestras and in concerts in this area. Miriam Bolkosky is a stu- dent of Jeffrey Solow at the University of Michigan. At age 7, she performed at Ken- nedy Center and Carnegie Hall. She is the winner of numerous scholarships, awards and competitions and has also performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and other community or- chestras in Michigan. Miriam and Gabriel Bolkosky are members of a string quartet and trio which is coached by Yitzak Schott-en of the University of Michigan. Song is studying with Mischa Kottler. At the age of 10, Andrew was soloist with the Detroit Symphony Or- chestra for a Young People's Concert. He is also the win- ner of many compeittions and placed third in the Interna- tional Young Keyboard Piano Competition in Ann Arbor. The winners will receive cash prizes and will perform in a Winners' Concert-at the Maple/Drake Jewish Corn- munity Center on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Aaron DeRoy Theater. flapper's Alley Trip For Kids Temple Emanu-El's Confir- mation Class will go to Trap- per's Alley on March 19. The group will ride on the People Mover and finish the evening with dinner at the Blue Nile. The Jewish Welfare Federa- tion will do a community pro- gram for Temple Emanu-El's fourth grade on March 30. At 9:30 a.m., Rabbi Lane Ste- inger, Cantor Norman Rose and Dr. Margaret Eichner will meet with parents of children ,who will become bar/bat mitzvah during the 1988-1989 school year. Temple Emanu-El's model Sedarim will be held on March 27. Kindergarten through seventh grade will hold individual Sedarim at both 'Thmple Emanu-El and the Jimmy Prentis Morris Building at the Jewish Corn- munity Center. Thachers have created original Haggadot based on their classes' mastery of Hebrew and goals and objectives of the religious school. The High School, grades eight-12, will hold its model Seder on March 28. Youth Award Winners Named The 43rd annual Youth Awards Program, sponsored by the League of Jewish Women's organizations, honored 21 youths at Temple Beth El recently. The youth awards program honors those Jewish students in the Metropolitan Detroit area who have attained a high scholastic average, who have demonstrated strong commitment to service in the community and who have submitted letters of recom- mendation from those organizations sponsoring their entry. In addition, each applicant must have written an essay on the topic "The Jewish Value System: How It Operates in American Life Today." The 21 honorees were: Naomi Berkove, Sarah Berkower, Penina Blumenfeld, Remy Borsand, Dov Chelst, Joel Finkelman, Marci Finkelstein, Jeff Goldsmith, Jennifer Gubkin, Joel Jackson, Alex Kaplan, Joanne Klain, Julie Kowalsky, Jeffrey Meyers, Jon Reifler, Susan Schlussel, Tamara Stillman, Joel Strimling, Robyn Tarnow, Jef- frey Traurig and Lisa Zager. Charlotte Nussbaum, chair- man of the event, announced that the winner of this year's award was Naomi Berkove, with honorable mention go- ing to Jeffrey Meyers and Robyn Tarnow. Betty Silver- farb donated the cash awards. Teens To Host Ann Arbor Group Temple Beth El's seventh and eighth grades will host Temple Beth Emeth from Ann Arbor for an exchange weekend today through Sunday. The weekend will include a special program tonight by Jerry Kaye, director of Olin Sang Ruby Camp Institute, coordinator of education for the division of youth ac- tivities nationally for the U.A.H.C. Saturday activities will in- clude a lunch prepared by the brotherhood of Temple Beth El to be followed by a trip to the Detroit Science Center.
