Young Republican

CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ

Local Columnist

published in Midstream Magazine. Also
publishing an article on U-M for Policy
Review.
PHILOSOPHY: "As a conservative, I
believe in limited, constitutional
government and the merits of the
individual in society rather than as part
of a collective group. The only limits to
an individual's opportunity to succeed
should be his own limits of talent,
initiative and enterprise. Today, I share
the Republican Party's vision for a
promising future, in which there are no
limits to opportunity and growth."

BACKGROUND: Debbie Schlussel grew up
in an Orthodox home in Southfield. She
attended Akiva Hebrew Day School
through the seventh grade and
graduated Hillel Day School after the
ninth grade. She completed her
secondary education at Southfield High
School. Schlussel has a double major at
the University of Michigan in political
science and Hebrew and Judaic studies.
Jewish education and Jewish youth
groups were and still are an important
part of Schlussel's life. She speaks
fluent Hebrew, has traveled to Israel
and was active in B'nei Akiva, and
attended its summer camps. "I was
always involved in Jewish groups and
organizations. That's why I got involved
in politics. I think it's important that
Jews are involved in both political
parties," says Schlussel. While many
youngsters were watching Sunday
morning . cartoons, Schlussel was only
allowed to watch her father's programs
— Meet the Press and other political
shows. "I understood politics at an early
age," she recalls. She and her father
campaigned together for the 1980
Reagan-Bush ticket. While many of her
friends chose to go skiing for winter
break last month, Schlussel choose
Capitol Hill, working for the Republican
Party. "Other people my age do not
have the contacts I have. Politics is my
calling. I'm good at meeting people and
strong in my beliefs." Schlussel is on a
first-name basis with several reporters
and congressmen. When she is neither
studying nor campaigning, she manages
to play tennis. She is an excellent
athlete and was a 1985 finalist for the
United States tennis team in the
Maccabiah Games. In the future,
Schlussel plans on attending law school
and running for Congress.
