birthday, Mayor Ronald F.
Gillham takes into account
the venerable _citizen's in-
teresting background, from
birthday in Russia March 14,
1888, his arrival in Detroit at
age of 13, his various ac-
tivities and his current devo-
tion to art, having mastered
woodcarving.
For the Jewish community
there is the especially
memorable recollection that
his brother, Joseph Bernstein,
was the manager of the
Detroit edition of the Jewish
Daily Forward and in the ear-
ly years he was associated
with him in that newspaper
which for many years enjoyed
leadership and popularity in
the Yiddish-speaking
community.
His early years here includ-
ed being with the Ford Motor
Co. work force when the auto
magnate announced a Five
Dollar a Day policy.
Then the variety of his ac-
tivities included the Forward
advertising department and
conducting an auto supplies
business.
Gaining recognition for
woodcarving, he was acclaim-
ed at two solo exhibits of
woodcarving at the Hun-
tington Woods Library.
For 75 years an active
member of Workmen's Circle,
he was among the activists in
the Landsmanshaften and in
Yiddish school systems.
His daughter Prudence
shares his home in Hun-
tington Woods and is
assisting in his collection of
memorable documents and
articles that denote the record
of early organized Detroit ac-
tivities. A larger Greater
Detroit Jewish community
joins with Huntington Woods
in extending greetings to the
centenarian.

NORMAL

SIGNS OF ADVANCED
TREATABLE
SCOLIOSIS
SCOLIOSIS

(Sko'le-o'sis) IS A SIDEWAYS CURVATURE OF THE
NORMALLY STRAIGHT SPINE. Scoliosis can cause

chronic back problems, heart dysfunctions, breathing dif-
ficulties, nervous system failure and other serious health
problems. CHIROPRACTIC RESEARCH HAS FOUND
SCOLIOSIS USUALLY BEGINS BEFORE THE AGE OF
5 AND IS PREVENTABLE IN MOST INSTANCES.
Therefore, I personally recommend that all school age
children have a complete spinal examination to determine
if scoliosis is developing in their spines. It won't take
much time or bother but it could be critical to lifelong
health. It's that simple. It's that important.
