What he is referring to is the fourth annual tricongregational concert co- sponsored by his synagogue, Cong. Beth Shalom, and Tem- ple Emanu-El and Cong. B'nai Moshe. This year's concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 20 at Beth Shalom. Theater, televi- sion and film entertainer Viola Harris will present a program entitled, "Laughter and Mars," which will include folk songs and theater songs in English, Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino. Rabbi Nelson said the three congregations decided to join for a cultural project for a variety of reasons. First, is their proximity to each other. In Oak Park between Lincoln, Ten Mile, Greenfield and Coolidge, the congregations are located within blocks of each other. Secondly, Nelson said, the congregations agreed that joint programm- ing would be cost effective, that is, that they could bring in a quality program and share the costs. Finally, there was a desire of the rabbis to share cultural programming. "The clergy of the three congregations have a good relationship with each other. The rabbis wanted to do something together," Nelson explained. "We in Oak Park love each other. We always realized that this neighborhood is the focal point of the (Jewish) com- munity." Susan Friedman, B'nai Moshe chairman for the pro- gram, said the project originally was aimed at "bet- ter interaction between the synagogues!' She said the congregations had previously joined for programming, such as with their Sisterhood Education Days. "We want a close relationship. There's no reason not to," Mrs. Friedman said. Once the first program was held, the rabbis and con- gregations said they felt that it could be a success, Nelson explained. He said he hoped that in the future Beth Shalom, Temple Emanu-El and B'nai Moshe could join forces for scholar-in-residence weekends. The program began four years ago and rotates among the three congregations. Joining Mrs. Friedman as chairmen are Anaruth and Henri Bernard of Beth Shalom and Susan Marwil of Temple Emanu-El. Tickets are available at Beth Shalom. Beth Achim Offers Class The adult education com- mittee of Cong. Beth Achim will host a series of classes providing hands-on study of Jewish practices. The classes will be led by Rabbi Milton Arm at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and on March 22 at Beth Achim. Call the synagogue office, 352-8670, for information.
