Hermelin said, "and have
them buy into the commu-
nity. Every person has a dif-
ferent level in terms of what
a 'good' gift is for them per-
sonally. But we are all part of
the community."
Sherman said they are try-
ing to dispel the idea "that
you have to be rich to be part
of Federation." She credits the
Neighborhood Project in Oak
Park and Southfield for get-
ting people involved in the
Campaign in an effort to give
something back to the com-
munity.
"We also have to educate
those who have been for-
tunate and have achieved
material success," said
Hermelin. "Their gift in-
fluences others, and helps the
community?'
Education includes re-
minding contributors of how
the Campaign aids Detroit
Jews and Jews in other com-
munities. Missions to Israel
were emphasized this year as
one of the best ways to "re-
charge and rejuvenate" feel-
ings for Jewish communal in-
volvement.
"In the long pull," said
Hermelin, "Israel faces
serious problems. But we'll
get our arms around it. And
the Campaign is also local
needs, Jewish families, the
old folks' home, Russians
coming here. Part of it (con-
tributing to the Campaign) is
being a member of this com-
munity."
