If the Campaign stays on pace, it could reach a record total in excess of $25 million to be used for social welfare projects in Detroit, national- ly, overseas and Israel. Al- though the Campaign.tfficial- ly closes April 11, its volun- teers will continue to solicit donations after that date. "April 11 is important, how- ever," Sherman said, "be- cause we immediately begin the allocations process. It's important to know how much money we actually have, rather than base the alloca- tions on estimates." Sherman and Hermelin credit previous Campaign leaders and staff for laying the groundwork for this year's success. The two have stressed several areas for 1988: "Involving a lot of peo- ple who haven't been in- volved before" and "fun" have been near the top of their list. They have reinstituted fund- raising meetings with major speakers and entertainers, in- cluding Tip O'Neil, Elie Wie- sel and Beverly Sills, and have emphasized face-to-face David Hermelin solicitations. Members of the Jewish Welfare Federation's Young Adult Division spoke in- dividually to contributors in its pre-Campaign phase, and averaged $500 gifts. "If we could get all the divisions to do that," Sherman said, "I know we would have a $35 million Campaign." But, with 30-to-40 telethons this Cam- paign year and face-to-face meetings, "it means that 18,000 people were seen, or talked to on the telephone, in Campaign Closing Event To Feature Theodore Bikel cashmere.
