opment, Waldheim, in an in-
terview broadcast on British
television, insisted that he
has "a clean conscience" with
respect to the interrogation of
six captured British comman-
dos in Greece in 1944, who
were later executed by the
Nazis. Athough he admitted
knowing of the incident, and
doing nothing about it, he
denied being personally in-
volved.
A new inquiry into the war-
time deaths of the six com-
mandos was ordered recently
by Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher, following allega-
tions that Waldheim was in-
volved in their fate. A similar
inquiry in 1986 found no link
with Austria's chief of state.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A secret
deal between Industry and
Trade Minister Ariel Sharon
and Finance Minister Moshe
Nissim to boost development
projects in West Bank set-
tlements before the coming
elections was revealed by the
Jersualem Post last week.
In return for a promise from
Sharon to stop calling for
devaluation of the shekel and
cease his opposition to Nis-
sim's economic policies, the
finance minister had agreed
to add the equivalent of $6.25
million to the funds available
for Jewish settlements in the
territories.
The Post reported that the
ministers, both members of
the Likud faction, struck
their deal in December, on
the eve of the Cabinet vote on
the draft budget for fiscal
year 1988-1989. The minis-
ters agreed that the proposed
West Bank settlements bud-
get line would not appear in
the budget to be approved by
the Knesset, but was, instead,
transferred to an existing
item in the budget.
