There is, of course, no need for political analysis or debate when you have God's own revelation whispered in your ear. The distinction must be clear. Not the involvement of religious persons and institu- tions in the political arena, but the coupling of theolog- ical immodesty and incivility threatens to divide our nation into the rejected and elected. Aside from the tranquility of our society, the character of religion itself is threatened. If religion is exemplified by heresy-hunting, absolutistic and simplistic pronounce- ments, it will be associated ( with bigotry and divisiveness. Men and women of religious sensibility must not allow the disgrace of religion through the politicization of the faith. There are ways to distin- guish responsible from irre- sponsible interactions between religion and the political process. Mature religious persons argue their positions but will not make villains out of dissenters or saints out of supporters. The new operation of religionized politics is not as much a viola- tion of the separation of church and state as it is a precarious separation of moral decency and reason- ableness from religion. Religion has much to contrib- ute to the political climate of our time but only if it pre- sents itself with modesty, wisdom and compassion. LETTERS( Continued from Page 6 change our governments pol- icies towards South Africa and Central America. And as Jews we must try to change Israel's military support of racist and oppressive govern- ments. As former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin wrote after a visit to Honduras, "When Israel in- volves itself in Central America . . . it hurts its image and loses whatever friends we have left in the world." Shelby Robinson Ft. Collins, Cola Palestinians Go Home! Stop the violence — not by beatings or jailings — but by giving the Palestinians what they say they want: a homeland. Ship those Arabs that try to kill our people with their stones and firebombs (they don't have guns yet) back to their homelands — Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia. That's where their people came from when they flocked to Palestine to benefit from the Jewish development of an empty land suffering from centuries of neglect. So, send them back to their homelands — and let's have peace! Karl-Ben-Joseph Detroit Moving In The Right Direction With great interest I read your piece concerning Jonathan Pollard (March 4). Ever since the sentencing I felt very strongly that both he and his wife received what can be termed as cruel and unusual punishment. I feel somewhat gratified now that things are moving in the right direction and there is some hope for the cou- ple and their distraught families. In the meantime, if there is a way in which I can make both lives even a little bit more bearable I would have liked to do it. I would have liked to tell them that they are not forgot- ten and that everything will be done for them to receive a pardon or to be sent to Israel, the country for which they practically gave their lives. Rachel Canaan-Kapen West Bloomfield BBYO Liked Purim Project On behalf of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, I would like to thank The Jewish News for inviting our youth to participate in the Jewish Experience For Families The Jewish News Purim Parcel Project. It provided many of our young people with the oppor- tunity to gain a first-hand grasp of what "shalach manot" means in both con- cept and action. Certainly, our youth learned a valuable lesson regarding Jewish ethics and community service through this worthwhile event. We look forward to be- ing involved in future corn- munity service projects spon- sored by your organization. — Jon Isenberg Assistant Regional Director B'nai B'rith Youth Organization
