UNIFIL Soldiers
Are Injured

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two
Norwegian soldiers serving
with the United Nations In-
terim Force in Lebanon were
seriously injured last Sunday
when they wandered into a
mine field in the southern
Lebanon security zone, north
of Marjayoun.
Rescue efforts were ham-
pered by shots fired from
unknown sources. According
to UNIFIL, that was "stan-
dard practice" on the part of
the rival guerrilla and militia
groups in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL sources could not
explain why the two soldiers
left the safe track on which
they were walking.

Herut Changes
Party Platform

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Herut wing of Likud has laid
claim to the eastern bank of
the Jordan River as well as
the West Bank. Herut's plat-
form committee, headed by
Knesset member Dov Shilan-
sky, revised a clause in the
party's election platform last
Sunday that expresses the
Jewish people's right to
"Eretz Yisrael" (Land of
Israel).
The platform now reads:
"The Jewish people has an
everlasting and indisputable
right to the entirety of Eretz
Yisrael, meaning both banks
of the Jordan River." The plat-
form committee also demand-
ed that Likud work toward
the immediate application of
Israeli law to the ad-
ministered territories, which
would be tantamount to their
annexation.
The eastern bank of the Jor-
dan is the Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan, ruled by
King Hussein. The territory,
originally part of the
Palestine Mandate awarded
to Britain after World War I,
was granted sovereignty
under British protection in
1921 and thereby separated
from western Palestine.
