Name Address City State Zip J 'Russian Revolutions Changed The World' Jerusalem — The revolu- tions that shook Russia in 1917 still affect the lives of people everywhere, since it is from that time on that we have been living in the era of "one. world," noted one of the organizers of an international conference on "The Revolu- tions of 1917: 70 Years After," held at the Hebrew Universi- ty of Jerusalem. The Russian revolutions of February and October 1917 for the first time brought the non-western European world into the mainstream of history; this permanently altered the development of in- ternational affairs, said Dr. Baruch Knei-Paz. Speaking of the legacy of the Bolshevik revolution, Prof. Richard Pipes of Har- vard University said that the Soviet revolution's heritage to the world is one of state- directed terrorist, repression in various forms (one-party government, secret police, concentration camps and mass killings) which the Soviet government im- plemented and which were later adopted by others, par- ticularly the Nazis, to con- solidate their power. On the positive side, said Pipes, one could say that the Soviet attempt to bring about world-wide revolution of the masses speeded up the pro- cess of decolonization in the world and encouraged legisla- tion to improve social welfare and equal rights in various countries, if for no other reason than to forestall the threat of communist inroads. Within the Soviet Union itself, however, the Soviet regime has failed to solve any of the problems that plagued Russia before 1917, said Pipes. Also noting the enduring failure of the Soviet regime to secure a satisfactory level of human well-being for its citizens — which was in fact the ideological basis for the revolution — was Prof. William Rosenberg of the University of Michigan. The Bolsheviks, in their revolution, hoped to create a classless society, directed by the people and free of govern- ment oppression, but they failed to understand at the outset that a modern society cannot function without the trappings of the state, such as laws, - a bureaucracy and a means of enforcing regula- tions. It was in the ruthless enforcement of state power by Lenin and later by Stalin that one can trace the "betrayal" of the revolutiOn, said Prof. Nissan Oren of the Hebrew University, who added that he was "not convinced" that even Gorbachev, with his in- tentions of introducing sweep- ing liberal changes, could tru- ly budge the bureaucracy. ESNEZ /1/1 111, ISA L 7N1U, A /MEW The Airline of Israel Non-Stop to and from Israel from New York Israel lki.geiv(* / London — The identity of the mysterious blonde woman who lured former Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu out of Britain in September, 1986 to eventual- ly face trial in Jerusalem for espionage and treason was disclosed in this week's edi- tion of the London Sunday Times. The woman, according to the newspaper, was Cheryl Bentov, 28, the American- born wife'of a former major in Israeli military intelligence. The Sunday Times claimed that Bentov, working for Mossad, the Israeli secret ser- vice, introduced herself to the lonely Vanunu in London as "Cindy." _ The Sunday Times is the newspaper to which Vanunu, who was once employed at Israel's nuclear facility in Dimona, leaked data about Israel's alleged nuclear weapons capabilities. He traveled with her to Rome on Sept. 1 and was kid- napped there by other Israeli agents and taken to. Israel against his will. The Sunday Times account contradicts the Israel government's denial that it conducted any illegal activities on British soil.
