filiated with a synagogue.
"Jews unaffiliated with a
synagogue are unlikely to be
affiliated with any other
Jewish organization and thus
unlikely to identify as Jews
on any credible measure of
Jewish identity."
■ The organized Jewish
community is willing to ac-
cept and celebrate as "Jewish
culture" virtually anything
"written by or about Jews or
of interest to Jews . . . even
when [it] bears no link to
Judaism or the Jewish tradi-
tion, however broadly those
terms may be defined!" ,
Prof. Liebman says also
that many behaviors that
some observers view as
causes for optimism ought to
be viewed less rosily. For ex-
ample, he says, although
many survey respondents say
they attend Passover seders,
what they actually attend are
meals served on Passover;
although many Jewish com-
munal leaders wear yar-
mulkes and say the ap-
propriate blessings at public
meal functions, they do
neither at home, and
although many families join
synagogues prior to their
children's bar or bat mitzvah,
they disaffiliate soon after the
ceremonies.
Also, he adds, many
American Jews profess an
"incoherent and random" ar-
ray of beliefs that they think
constitutes Judaism, but in
fact does not.
In sum, says Prof. Liebman,
while he does not see signifi-
cant incidence of the classic
form of assimilation — where
those raised as Jews cease to
think of themselves as Jews
— he does see "a more com-
plex model of assimilation .. .
one attenuation of ties bet-
ween American Jews and the
Jewish tradition and/or bet-
ween American Jews as a col-
lective body and the collective
body of Jews outside the
United States!'
