JV coach Ed Okuniewski, who was brought in to the program by Krisniski last year, frequently reminds his squad that two of last year's JV starters are now varsity starters. "Even though we've been losing," he says, "our players, individually, and as a team, have gotten so much better . . . not one kid's been down about it because they know that we're getting better and they know that they're gonna be a part of that varsity team next year." The starting point guard and JV captain is sophomore Lee Hurwitz. "He's the leader on the court," says Okuniewski. "He's the catalyst. He's the guy that gets the job done. He'll tell the guys where to go. He's a strong leader on the court, very strong." Okuniewski has five other Jewish players on the JV team, all sophomores. Jon Weber, a strong outside shooter, also starts. Weber hit five three-point shots in a re- cent game against Hazel Park. Adam Shapiro, says Okuniewski with a chuckle, is "a gem. He's been an up-and- down kind of player. Now, for the past two or three weeks, he's been a steady, strong player." Shapiro plays two- thirds to three-quarters of each game. Matt Citron is an improv- ing player, says Okuniewski, particularly on offense, work- ing on "his fakes, his drives to the hole. When he gets stronger and quicker he can possibly be a part of the var- sity program?' Oren Golan and Gabe Lebbitt are reserve players giving strong efforts and improving, according to the coach. Freshman coach Doug Zack, who is Jewish, also coaches football and softball in the school district. He had never coached basketball before last year. None of his five Jewish players are starters. Guard Jason Koenig is the sixth or seventh man and gets good playing time. Jeremy Samson is the backup point guard. Forward Darron Rosenberg plays about half the game. Seth Jackier is a forward and A.J. Weiner a guard. Zack is realistic about his squad. "Talent-wise, we are so over-matched it's ridiculous and the kids know it. But I don't have one kid that has ever . . . dropped his head and said, 'That's it: . . . It's tough, we don't have the kids that Your skin deserves careful attention and protection. This group I have this year are really into it. And we're looking to make `ern varsity players." Okuniewski cites similar goals. "Even though there's three teams, the freshman, JV and the varsity, it's one program and it's one goal, and that's to get the varsity going?' lb that end, the coaches will start their own basket- ball camp this summer. Krisniski says his varsity team has played up to his ex- pectations, even though those expectations exceeded other people's judgements. "I knew that we could be a good basketball team, because we have some hard-nosed kids and some kids who play their roles well. So I have been pleased, because I expected this kind of effort. I felt we could get a couple more wins though, than we do have. I always set my goals high?' Next season, the Barons hope to set those goals even higher. 111 STATS B'nai B'rith Volleyball Final standings of the B'nai B'rith men's volleyball league: A Division Wins Losses Keidan 60 27 Marshall 56 32 Morgenthau 45 44 Centennial 31 59 Detroit —1 30 60 B Division Wins Losses Brotherhood —285 5 Brotherhood —1 57 32 Marshall-T.G. 33 57 Detroit —2 31 58 Tucker-Grant 18 72 B'nai B'rith Bowling Scores Bloch-Israel High games: Neil Werner Neil Werner Jay Gold High series: Neil Werner Phil Goldstein Sandy Pliskow 255 245 224 704 557 542 TORVIlleDEAN Olympic Gold Medalists GLAMOUR IS BACK!
