A now defunct black
religious cult, called the
House of David, for years
operated an amusement
village. And downtown Ben-
ton Harbor housed the
world's largest fruit market.
Tourists took boat trips
across Lake Michigan to see
Benton Harbor when St.
Joseph was depicted as the
poor sister city.
At that time, there were
three Jewish congregations in
Benton Harbor. The Orthodox
congregation folded during
the 1950s and the Reform and
Conservative congregations
merged in the 1970s as Tem-
ple B'Nai Shalom, now a Con-
servative congregation led by
Rabbi Michael Schorin.
Attrition caused the
merger. The Reform rabbi was
retiring and the Conservative
synagogue was anxious to
add the Reform congregation
to its membership roster. The
two congregations had been
duplicating efforts in such a
small community.
When 1-94 came through
the southwest part of
Michigan in the 1960s, mer-
chants started moving
businesses to convenient strip
shopping plazas and malls
that were accessible to the
highways. Residents also
began buying homes in the
surrounding townships.
The huge industrial plants
joined the exodus, leaving
masses unemployed. The
world-famous fruit market
moved to the city's outskirts
and the House of David clos-
ed its amusement park.
Now, for the first time in
years, residents and govern-
ment officials are convinced
the city is on its way to
recovery.
Mayor Wolf has been work-
ing religiously to make it
happen. He says Benton Har-
bor will "look like brand
new" by 1992.
"This is the first time since
we went downhill in the
1960s that anyone is op-
timistic," Little added. "It's
exciting. We're moving in the
right direction."
