Conyers, D-Detroit, was a featured speaker at the event, and letters of support were submitted by Reps. David Bonior, D-Mt. Clemens, and George Crockett, Jr., D-Detroit. Other politicians, including Detroit and Dearborn Mayors Coleman Young and Michael Guido, were contacted about the event but did not respond, Santi said. Local reports also listed Ed- ward McNamara as lending support to the procession — a claim spokesmen for the Wayne County Executive would neither confirm nor deny. The only statement McNamara issued in response to questions on the matter was "I support any cause that opposes the killing of children and women!' Repeated attempts to speak with Bonior and Conyers were unsuccessful. However, Julian Epstein, ad- ministrative aide and spokesman for Conyers, said the representative's participa- tion in the event was an ex- pression of his concern for the recent wave of violence in the Middle East and for the Israel Defense Forces' use of "heavy- handed tactics" against the Palestinians. According to Epstein, Con- yers' presence at the proces- sion was a protest against the "clear and repeated violations of the human rights of the Palestinian civilians living in the West Bank and Gaza. There has been an unjustified use of violence to suppress uprisings whose roots are in quest for freedoms that are fundamentally American." Asked if Conyers' state- ment at the rally, calling for recognition of "the legitimate representatives of the Palesti- nian people," translated to the Liberation Palestine Epstein Organization, replied: "We don't get hung up on semantics!' Later, Conyers said through Epstein that the Palestinians and no one else should be given the right of deciding who will represent them at the negotiating table. Epstein acknowledged that incidents of antagonism have been committed by both sides, but he said there has been "disproportionate force used by the Israeli army." In his letter of support, Bonior labeled recent in- cidents of violence in the ter- ritories "yet another manifestation of the grave in- Rep. He added that "The Palesti- nian people have legitimate claims that must be address- ed over a negotiating table and not with tear gas and bullets and beatings and bulldozers!' Crockett, in a telephone in- terview from his Washington office, said he issued a state- ment in support of the proces- sion, beginning with his declaration of "deep regret" that he could not attend "this sad but important event!' He condemned what he termed Israel's "iron-fist" policy and mourned those Palestinians whom he said were killed not only by Israeli soldiers, but by settlers and civilians as well. In his letter, Crockett said he hoped the procession would bring to the attention of the Reagan Administra- tion, the Congress and Israel that "it's time for a change in the Middle East!' As part of this, he recommended that Israel relinquish the territories. Crockett also said that no fair settlement in the region can be achieved without the participation of the "legitimate representative of the Palestinian people." Although not mentioned in his statement, Crockett said this refers to the PLO. Crockett said he does not feel the Palestinians have played any role in instigating violence in the territories, but rather "Israel has done everything wrong and the Palestinians are just fighting back!' Last week's procession was organized by 14 local Palesti- nian groups including the Palestine Aid Society, which Santi described as a non- profit organization dedicated
