Los Angeles — A leading
Orthodox rabbi and sup-
porters of a hard-line Israeli
policy in Gaza and the West
Bank have demanded that
the leftist New Jewish Agen-
da be expelled from the
Jewish Federation Council of
Greater Los Angeles.
Rabbi Abner Weiss and the
local chapter of Americans
for a Safe Israel based their
separate appeals on a
demonstration last December
outside the Israel Consulate-
General in Los Angeles in
which Arabs and the New
Jewish Agenda participated.
Placards at the demonstra-
tion, Weiss told the federation
board, "compared what's hap-
pening in Gaza to what Hitler
did, which is an absolutely
obscene comparison. There is
simply no place for this kind
of organization within the
family of Jewish organiza-
Rabbi Julian White, local
president of Americans for a
Safe Israel, charged that New
Jewish Agenda members had
chanted in front of the Con-
sulate, "We are the PLO, we
are the PLO."
According to Joel Gayman
of the New Jewish Agenda,
members of his organization
were walking with pro-
Palestinian demonstrators
"in separate delegations to
express empathy with Palesti-
nian outrage at Israeli oc-

cupation tactics, and sym-
pathy with relatives either
maimed, killed or beaten."
Gayman suggested that
the ouster demand reflected
increasing frustration by
hard-line sympathizers at the
continuing standoff in the
Observers believe the fracas
reflects the increasingly bit-
ter divisions between the left
and right wings of the Jewish
community in several Ameri-
can cities.
Reinforcing this viewpoint
is a declaration issued by 217
Jews in San Francisco strong-
ly condemning an earlier peti-
tion by 90 academicians that
criticized Israeli policies and
actions in the Gaza Strip and
the West Bank.

Calling the academicians'
petition "a sellout of our
Jewish brethren," the strong-
ly worded declaration affirms
the right of Israeli soldiers to
defend themselves in life-
threatening situations, denies
the right of American Jews to
criticize Israel, and accuses
the academicians of under-
mining the security of the
Jewish state.
The 217 signatories includ-
ed 10 rabbis, 50 physicians,
the presidents of Orthodox
congregations, Holocaust
survivors, and the director of
the rightist Herut Zionists of
Northern California.
