Trip To Airport
Beat The Cruise

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

magine the best part of
a Caribbean cruise being
the ride to and from
Metropolitan Airport here in
Detroit.
A limousine from Cullan
Meathe's Statewide Limou-
sine Service took us to the
airport for another jimbo jam-
bo mixed-up flight with Nor-
thwest Airlines.
Somebody else had our
seats and naturally one of our
bags was temporarily lost .. .
Coming back it was even
worse . . . We almost didn't
get on because the flight was
overbooked . . . even though
we had our tickets well in ad-
vance . . . and before the over-
booking . . . You'd think those
with tickets beforehand
would be taken care of.
It was a supper flight back
and nothing edible . . . with
the stewardess refusing to
substitute even though it was
done for a handsome young
man two rows behind us .. .
The plane landed at Metro in
a center part of the airport
and passengers had to walk
on the snow and ice . . . Then
"a mile" to the baggage . . . It
was all there this time, but
the val-pac was not in such
great condition . . . Our plane
came in about 20 minutes
late, also.
But Cullan's man was
there, holding a sign with our
name for identification .. .
His help, politeness and effi-
ciency were much
appreciated.
Oh yes, the cruise . . . First-
ly let me say that because of
lack of communication it's the
last time I'll do business
again with an out-of-town
travel agency . . . Sandel
Travel in Columbus, Ohio was
used because it had set up the
cruise for a group of people
who were relatives of the
friends with whom we were
going.
We got an outside cabin .. .
and that was one of the good
points of the trip . . . Large
bay window, good-sized room
and television set.
First two days at sea were
rough . . . Amazing how those
busboys and some of the
waiters could carry all those
glasses and dishes without
spillage . . . 10,000 meals a
day are served for breakfast,
lunch and dinner on the
Celebration, largest in the
Carnival fleet . . . Word is
that next year there'll be one
twice the size!
Some of the people could

Nate Light and Danny Raskin

barely walk . . . plenty of sea
sickness . . . High waves and
rocky ship didn't bother the
dice or cards in Celebration's
full casino.
What made the cruise were
some of the people we were
with . . . Table next to ours in-
cluded . . . Nate and Irene
Light, Delores and Shep
Schuldinger, Stuart and Ron-
nie Sinai, all of Detroit, and
David and Gloria Sinai and
Sheldon and Corrine Sinai of
Columbus.
Our table had . . . Mickie
and Joe Klein, Bernice and
Al Kesner . of Detroit, and
Lainie and Gary Beim and
Laura and Harvey Samuels,
of Columbus.
Of course plenty of food
morning, noon and night .. .
Not the best, but passable .. .
Midnight buffet a laugh,
though . . . Seemed like the
same thing every evening .. .
Yes, a lot of food, but it didn't
mean people had to eat it .. .
Some folks, though, ate like
they were going to the electric
chair and it was their last
meal . . . especially at those
late night buffets.
Celebration superliner is
almost a city within a city .. .
geared more for the younger
set.
You may call our first three
days at sea almost a complete
waste . . . Only thing that
made the trip worthwhile was
some of the company from
this area . . . Boat so rocky
that a few people nearly went
into the poles on closed deck
. . . Waves so high and boat so
rocky, a lot of disapppointed
people when the captain an-
nounced that he had to turn
the ship around and head for
his next port, St. Thomas .. .
But no more disappointed
than those on the Holiday,
around the 1,000 mark,
Celebration's sister ship
which left port and came
right back.
